Consumers who purchase Sony laptops in some European and Asian countries get access to an online "Sony newsstand" stocked with technology publications.

Maggiotto says the combination transforms the devices into e-readers of sorts. Consumers can then use Zinio's technology to purchase, consume and organize content ranging from Rolling Stone to Martha Stewart Living to The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook.

The deals will integrate Zinio's reading and e-commerce software into the devices. One of the tie-ins will likely involve a European wireless carrier looking to launch its own digital newsstand. Zinio Chief Executive Richard Maggiotto says he expects to announce 10 to 12 such alliances in 2010. The San Francisco-based firm is striking partnerships to place its technology on everything from netbooks to tablet computers to smart phones. But for people who don't want to buy a dedicated e-reader, there is an alternative: gadgets that tap into digital newsstands created by online publisher Zinio.
